1993 Summer Special Musical Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Gaiden Dark Kingdom Fukkatsu Hen, or the first Sailor Moon musical, first came out in 1993. It was the first of 31 stage shows. The show features Anza Ohyama as Usagi and Sailor Moon. This show is set during the first arc, against Queen Beryl.
The stage was pretty well done. It does fallow more of the manga then the anime, or at least the first anime. The main difference is that the four sailor scouts and the Shiten’ō, The Four Kings of Heaven or Price Endymion’s generals, are romantically involved. This is hinted at in the manga and confirmed in the second anime. I really like the relationships between the eight of them. So, it is nice to see it in the musicals. Also, they had glitter canons. Every Sailor Moon musical needs glitter canons.
The musical honestly felt like a movie that would go with the series. It didn’t fallow the original story exactly, but it still fit in the world of Sailor Moon. I can appreciate that. Many of the musical now try to take on to much of the story or tries to hard to be exactly like the original anime or manga. Very few try to do their own thing that fits with in the realm of the story.
An other thing I can appreciate is good acting. Many times for live actions actors are picked because they are popular or good looking not because they can act. All of these acts can act and sing. They aren’t the image of hotness, but that if fine because they hold there own on the stage. There wasn’t one that did a bad job. Every one was good. For live actions that is almost unheard of.
There is one thing that I don’t like, one thing. The costumes, oh the costumes. They look like they were attracted by a bedazzler. Which does work for Sailor, there is more glitter then episodes. That is saying some thing. I can live with the costumes, yes even the Beryl dress. Which looked like she got in a fight with a Christmas tree, lost, then wondered on stage. Pretty much what I’m staying is, the costumes are great, but I can live with them.
Now the wigs, those things need to be taken down about three degrees. Or the costume department needs to learn what a natural color is.
I really liked the show. I felt like it was fun and enjoyable. If you like Sailor Moon or are in need of nostalgia then this show is great. It’s sweet and fun and will take you back to your childhood. I know it did for me. Even with the bad costumes and wigs, it gives it some appeal. It makes it more charming in a way.
