I Can’t Understand What My Husband is Saying, is based on a 4-panel manga, by the same name. It was first published online then was published in print in 2011. The manga is still going and the anime has had two seasons so far, with a total of 25 episodes.
Full disclosure, I don’t like slice of life animes. Some of then are decent and have good characters. But, so many of them, nothing happens. There is no development, of story or character, there is almost no plot and it’s just things happening to these people. Every once in a while you will find a good one. I Can’t Understand What My Husband is Saying, is one of those good ones. Not just as a slice of life, but it’s a good anime.
It’s a simple story about a husband and wife who love and support each other. Both of them have flaws, Hajime is a crazy otaku and often says odd/random things, Kaoru is a workaholic and smokes. Even though they don’t always understand each other they always support each other and work with each other. It is probably the sweetest thing you will ever see. At no point do they fall into the anime trope of will they wont they or they love each other just admit it already. This is the type of romance I want in slice of lifes. They love each other they work well together and they are together. How hard is that! Obviously very hard, because so many romance animes, never let characters be together. But, this one does! Joy to all.
Hajime and Kaoru aren’t the only ones in the anime, they have their friends and family around them as well. All of their friends and family act as a great support system for them. There are times when they hit a wall and wouldn’t have made it with out their support system. It’s good to see that this anime shows that people cant’ do it on their own. They need help sometimes even if it’s just to tell them they are being silly.
The best thing about this anime is, if you are an otaku the jokes are 10x more funny. There are a bunch of references to otaku culture and various other anime, manga, and video games. It also takes a more serious look at otaku culture. Showing what’s wrong with it. Such as Hajime has a 2D girlfriend and starts to treat real girls like that. He realizes that he can’t treat people like that any more and changes how he sees the world. That also leads to him and Kaoru dating.
At no time is the show over dramatic, or unrealistic. Everything that happens in it is something that I could see happening in real life. That is why it is such a good anime. There is one problem, it’s short. Every episode is only about three minutes long. However, because it is so short you only get the good in it. There isn’t any part that drags or has nothing to do with the story. So, it being short actually helps make it good.
Watch this anime. It is short, simple and so sweet. I can’t think of an other show that is like this one. It is some thing that can be enjoyed over and over again, and should be.
Come back next week, I’ll be watching Aoharu X Machine gun.
