This is the first Fairy Tail movie, titled Fairy Tail the Movie: The Phoenix Priestess. It came out in 2012. It is a companion to the anime by the same name. The anime is based off the manga Fairy Tail by Hiro Mashima.
I really liked how bloody this movie is. The Fairy Tail anime is some times handled with kid gloves. It often tones down the darker themes in the manga version. So, I was very pleasantly surprised when it was filled with the characters I love getting all bloody. I’m never a fan of the toning down of violence in anime or keeping the violence but not the blood. I think it takes away from the style the artist sets for the story.
An other this that I really don’t like is when characters act completely different in different in carnations of the same franchise. This movie kept all the characters in character. It was nice to see. Some times in movie you see characters do things that they would never do in any other medium. I can understand changing them slightly to fit the story or the medium. But, there are times in other anime movie, were some thing happens and it is completely from left field. Every thing seemed to fit in the world of Fairy Tail. It wasn’t just how the characters acted. The story fit in the time line and in the world. It didn’t feel like you had to figure out when they had time to do this. It felt just like one of the many adventures Fairy Tail mages get involved in.
And, just like any other adventure that Fairy Tail gets involved in every one was apart of it. I do wish more characters were in the fighting aspect of it. But, we did get to see almost every guild member at some point in time in the movie. It is always nice to see one of the official canon couples being awesome together. I’m talking about Alzack and Bisca Connell. I think they are an adorable couple and deserve more screen time always.
I really enjoyed this movie. If you are a fan of Fairy Tail, manga or anime, you’ll like this movie. It pulls at your heart strings in all the right ways, just like Mashima does with every single chapter. I swear that man enjoys torturing his reads with the feels.
Join me next week I’ll be watching Apple Seed.
