The Edge of Tomorrow or Live. Die. Repeat. was released in 2014. It is based on the light novel All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. It stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. It fallows the same basic plot of All You Need is Kill, except for Cruise’s character, who is a little different from is novel counter part.
I did a review of All You Need is Kill before and I love that book. What I am not going to do is tell you how much better the book is from the novel. I will review the movie by it self and not compared to the novel. I may point out a few differences in story, but that’s really it. Now, some of you may be wondering my take on the westernization of the main character. First off it’s not the same character as the novel and it worked for the movie. I don’t mind it. Do I wish they kept the original premise? Yes, and no. It would have been a different movie and it would have been harder to pull off. Why, because so much of the book is inside Keiji’s head. That would make it hard to translate to a movie.
Taking this movie away from any thing else that it’s attached to such as the book or the manga that was based on the book, you can really enjoy it. When ever any one compares some thing to the original source material you are always disappointed. That means you will also never be happy with what the movie is. The movie is a fun entertaining action movie. It has great plot and development. The characters fall down over and over and over again and have to pick up them selves time and time again. By doing this they continually try to fix the mistakes of the past. Who doesn’t want a do over of a day that sucked.
The best part of this movie has to be the look of it. The mimics are cool octopus looking things. They are menacing but not to scary they belong in a horror film and not an action movie. The suits all the soldiers wear look awesome and they don’t look to sci-fi to be out of place. A lot of science fiction makes the robots and technology to far advanced or to fiction for it to be in the near future. that just pushed the story to far into the future and you’re not sure when or where you are.
Did I like this movie, you can bet your bottom dollar I did. Yes, I just made an Anne reference, deal with it. Do I think they did a good job turning they book into reality. Yes, and I’m not opposed to the changes that were made. I think it was an over looked science fiction movie that had great action and a decent story. I think every one who likes action adventure and science fiction should watch it. Also, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are both hot and which ever way you swing you can enjoy looking at pretty people.
Join me next week when I watch Death Note, the first movie.
